Maine-Greenland Collaborations is a project that combines art with the social and natural sciences to explore cultural, environmental, and socio-economic changes facing coastal communities in Maine and Greenland.

This site highlights Intersecting Ecologies, the project’s art, social science, and community practice component, launched on Long Island, Maine (USA) in 2020. Since then, the geographic scope of our work has expanded to include Sears Island, Maine and the Kujataa region of South Greenland. Project activities include interviews with coastal residents, arts-based community workshops, walks across distinctive landscapes, and educational/cultural exchanges, which include a partnership with the University of Greenland in Nuuk,

Through these activities, a repository of transcripts, photographs, videos, and sound recordings was formed and serves as a basis for creating narratives about changing ecologies and lived experiences of residents in Maine and Greenland. Our work is shared through art exhibitions, scholarly papers, and public programs with the goal of building relationships and creating discourse around complex issues.

In the Meantime

The video was co-created by Paula Gerstenblatt and Jan Piribeck for the Intersecting Ecologies exhibition at the Parsonage Gallery, Searsport, Maine (09/06-11/30, 2025). The exhibition was supported by the Onion Foundation whose mission is to build a more equitable and healthy Maine by deepening the connection of all people to the arts and nature.
